Selma Parks & Recreation

The Town of Selma Parks and Recreation Department recognizes that recreation is a valuable part of life.

Members of the Parks & Recreation Department seek to promote enjoyable, constructive leisure and recreational activities that will meet the needs of the surrounding community.

The commitment to health education, entertainment, and high morality will be emphasized through all activities and programs conducted or sponsored by Selma Parks & Recreation.

Selma Parks & Recreation will strive to maintain activities that are beneficial to current population needs and create programs that are considered appropriate to the changing needs of the area in and around Selma.

What does Selma Parks & Recreation do?

The Recreation Department sponsors a wide range of youth, adult, and senior athletic programs throughout the year. For youth, we provide football, cheerleading, soccer,  fast-pitch softball, basketball, baseball, T-ball, and coach-pitch. For adults, we offer church softball league.  For our senior adults, we offer pickleball and line dancing along with the Johnston County Senior Games. Festivals, special events, and special programs are provided throughout the year as well. The largest of these events is the Selma Railroad Days Festival that is held during the first weekend of October featuring live entertainment, food, vendors, a children’s area, parade, hollerin’ contest and much more. The All-American Festival and the Christmas in Selma Tree Lighting and Parade are other events sponsored by the Parks and Recreation department that enhance the livability of our community. Recreation facilities operated by our department include the Selma Civic Center, Richard B. Harrison Gymnasium, neighborhood parks, tennis courts, outdoor basketball courts, picnic shelters, and baseball/softball fields. Many facilities are available to rent for birthday parties, company picnics, family reunions, and other functions.

Today, we find ourselves in the midst of an important and unprecedented challenge brought on by the COVID-19 Pandemic. Despite the unknown road ahead, the crisis has made it clear that parks, public spaces, and wellness practices are as important now as they have ever been in our history. Getting outdoors in the sunshine for exercise and building cities for people are two emerging trends that are central to this partnership opportunity. As we work to collectively regain our strength and keep our immune systems strong, we know that the National Fitness Campaign can play a vital role in anchoring community wellness practices and positive initiatives for our community.

Here’s a short 2-minute video that will give you a brief overview of what the project is all about:
